13.05.2024 - Women Who Write - 3 Creative writing prompts

Women Who Write meet every 2nd Monday in Edinburgh. I carefully curate 3 creative writing prompts to inspire our writers to beat the blank page.

We used images from @brutalistplants as inspiration for our creative writing.

How to write creatively using these prompts?

Get your pen and notepad, or laptop and find a quiet space. Set a timer for 45minutes and then read the first creative prompt, allow your mind to wander for a moment and then start writing!

Sprint 1 - 45 mins

You find yourself lost somewhere in the wild woods, you find a clearing and all you see is the building. Who is there? Where is it? What is it? Think about your senses, what can they hear, smell, see, taste? What happens when your character steps inside?

BREAK

Take a break for 15 minutes, go a for a walk, get a cup of tea, allow your writing and your mind to breathe. Then come back to your quiet space ready for the next writing prompt. Take a look at the images again, look into its corners and layers, then read the second prompt.

Sprint 2 - 45mins

Linking to what you have written in sprint 1 now introduce a new character. Are they a friend or foe? Do they turn up unexpectedly? Were they always there? Are they known to yur other characters? How does it change the envinorment, how do they interact?

BREAK

Take another break for 15 minutes, you have to let your mind rest and recover from expending all of that creative energy. Look outside, day dream, smile, drink more tea. Come back to your quiet space ready for the final prompt. Take a look at the images again, what have you not seen before? Now read the final prompt.

Sprint 3 - 45 mins

There is a room in the building that your character has yet to explore. Is it locked? Have they always known it was there and they have yet to explore. Tkae your character inside the room. Whats in there? Where does it lead? How does your character change as a result of going inside? What do they have to overcome to get in - internal conflict or external conflicts?

And you’re done.

Did you get much written? I hope these creative writing prompts inspire you to beat the blank page and get writing!

Thanks for reading,

Dominique
